How the game actually works — guard, break, riposte, seals, gloom and progression, straight from the game’s own explanations.

Perfect Guard

Combat

Guarding just before an enemy attack would connect executes a Perfect Guard. Executing a Perfect Guard does not consume guard energy and builds the enemy Break Meter.

Press [Active Block] just before getting struck to Perfect Guard

Consecutive Perfect Guards will Break the enemy, leaving them vulnerable to a Riposte.

Parry

Press [Parry] just before getting struck to Parry an attack

Riposte

When Broken press [Light Attack] to Riposte an enemy

Exploiting Vulnerability

Combat

Some enemies are more vulnerable to certain attacks. Try experimenting with attack types such as Light, Heavy, and Ranged against your adversaries.

Plunge Attack

When dropping down from great heights press [Light Attack] to perform a Plunge Attack which prevents fall damage

Free Aim

Combat

By default, ranged weapons will lock on to enemy targets while aiming. Free Aim is available as an option in the game menu. When toggled, aim is unrestricted unless an enemy has been manually locked on to.

Reclaiming your Shell

Shells

Your connection to the Shell has been severed. Wound your enemies with Melee attacks to reclaim it. You can track the progress on your Seal.

When you've dealt enough Melee damage you can reclaim your Shell.

Press [Shell Ability] to revive a reclaimable Shell.

Using sidearms

Sidearms

Hold [Aim] to Aim then press [Sidearm Primary] to Fire

Hold [Aim] to Aim then press [Sidearm Secondary] to trigger

While aiming press [Weapon Buff] to infuse your Sidearm

Equipping seals

Seals

Equipping different Seals dramatically alters your Character's capabilites.

Vatra's Seal

Seals

When equipped, the Vatra's Seal allows you to Harden.

When harden is broken by damage, your current attack quickly resumes.

Slayer Seal

Seals

Sidearms will deal Break Damage, exposing enemies to Riposte attacks.

It restores some Health and Resolve on performing a Riposte attack.

The Slayer Seal reduces the difficulty of combat by granting abilities that enhance both ranged attacks and ripostes. Equipping the Slayer Seal will disable achievements on this save file.

Gloom

Progression

A substance documented by the disciples to grant great visions of prophecy, but also death. You recognize it as fuel for your kind, spilled from Undermether. The disciples have a device which can refine Gloom to strengthen the Harbinger.

Permanent pickup (PP) items

Progression

You have found a permanent pickup (PP) item. PP Items can be equipped in the active or passive PP slots found in the inventory menu. Acitve PP items share consumed charges, which restore on rest.

Familiarity

Progression

Acquiring more stacks of PP items builds familiarity with them, increasing their active powers and unlocking new passive capabilities.

Offerings & Ovum thieves

World

The disciples have left offerings meant to lure in the Ovum thieves. If you want to claim the reward, you must dispatch the thieves in time. If you stray far enough from an offering, it will also be forfeit and the thieves will not follow you.

New Game Plus

Endgame

Welcome to New Game Plus. Although Mether has sent the Ova on their way, many will not survive. Recover more Ova, that we may bolster our odds of survival. The foul passenger has returned, growing ever stronger.

Resolve

Combat

Powerful resource consumed to fire sidearms and trigger abilities.

Stagger damage

Combat

Deal sufficient damage of this type to make the victim stagger.

Lock-on & evasive enemies

Combat

Some opponents can take evasion actions which will render them untargetable by lock-on for a brief duration.

Tarcore

Progression

Tarcore is a material used to level up tarstones from level 2 to level 3. This material can be obtained by leveling up other tarstones.

After leveling up tarstones, tarcores will be dropped at it's mouth. Interact with the front portion of the Tarforge to claim acquired Tarcores.

Try using and leveling up different tarstones to get Tarcores. You can then use those Tarcores to level up more Tarstones.

Shell progression

Progression

When consuming Gloom to level up you will aqcuire Shell Points, also known as <img id="SP"/>. You can spend <img id="SP"/> to improve your Shells and obtain new Abilities.

The Shell Points Capacity also known as <img id="SC"/> defines how many Abilities can be obtained at the same time. <miscwidget ID="ShellCapacity"/> However Abilities can be freely refunded and points re-spent. Try to mix and match different Abilities to craft unique and different playstyles.

Shell Abilities are locked behind the Shell Bond Tier. <miscwidget ID="ShellBonding"/> You can increase the Shell Bond Tier by spending Glimpses <img id="Glimpses"/> at the Shellkeeper. Unlike <img id="SP"/>, spent Glimpses cannot be refunded.

Character progression

Progression

There are multiple ways to improve the strength of the Harbinger and Shells. Spending Gloom to level up will improve stats for both the Harbinger and your Shells

The upgraded stats from leveling up with Gloom are automatically selected based on the level of the Harbinger.

Fast travel & Mether's Breath

World

You have inhaled a potent vapor from the lungs of the Undermether, awakening a strength you did not know you had. Mether's Breath is now available as an option from Beacons. It allows you to quickly travel between any revitalized Beacon you have visited.

Mether's Breath can cleanse corruption, revealing hidden paths and opening areas that were once beyond reach.

Warning: Using Mether's Breath will spend all your gloom. Do you understand this?

Beacons

World

Enter the Beacon to attempt the challenge of cleansing it of all corruption.

Cleansing this Beacon will grant access to a nearby Gate.
