Resident Evil Requiem begins to lift the veil of mystery that has surrounded it since its announcement at the Summer Game Fest. Although Capcom has been drip-feeding details, each new revelation only heightens the anticipation—especially after the title shattered several pre-order records before any gameplay was even shown.
A look into the past: protagonist and open world
The most surprising of the recent leaks concerns the original development plans. At first, Requiem was not only going to feature a different protagonist than the one we’ll see in the final release, but its initial concept envisioned an online open-world game.

As director Koshi Nakanishi confirmed in a new behind-the-scenes preview, the team explored a multiplayer-focused design following the success of Resident Evil 7, the remakes and Village. However, they soon realized this approach didn’t match what the community wants: players still crave the claustrophobic tension and pacing that define the series.
“We experimented with an online open-world Resident Evil, but by late 2021 we decided to completely restart the project,” Nakanishi explains. “We didn’t want to stray fans from the essence they value so much.”
The reboot that defines Requiem
That full restart allowed the team to refine the narrative, redesign levels, and settle on the protagonist we’ll finally experience. While the new development video isn’t public yet, Capcom promises comprehensive details are coming soon.
Release date and Gamescom demo
Resident Evil Requiem will launch on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC on February 27, 2026. Before its official release, attendees at Gamescom will be able to play an exclusive demo showcasing much of the game’s new gameplay and atmosphere.
In the meantime, keep an eye on Capcom’s official channels—and on our site—to catch every update on Requiem. The nightmare is about to begin!
