CD Projekt Red Unveils First Witcher 4 Gameplay – Welcome to Kovir

At Unreal Fest, CD Projekt Red surprised fans by showing the very first gameplay footage of The Witcher 4. The demo reveals the region of Kovir — a first-time location in the games, though well-known to readers of the books.

The tech demo follows Ciri on a monster contract in Kovir, a resource-rich region filled with mountains and lush forests. Visually, the game already looks stunning.

Since their strategic partnership began in 2022, CDPR and Epic Games have worked together to enhance Unreal Engine 5 for large-scale open-world games. Running at 60 FPS on a PlayStation 5, the demo showcases several advanced features: the Unreal Animation Framework, Nanite Foliage rendering, MetaHuman integration with large-scale AI crowd systems, and more.

These tools will become available to all UE5 developers with the upcoming 5.6 update.

Despite the excitement, CDPR co-CEO Michał Nowakowski urged caution, saying the game is still «far from finished.» The company had previously stated The Witcher 4 wouldn’t release before 2027 at the earliest, so it’s still at least 2–3 years away.

The Witcher 4 is described as a brand-new open-world RPG that kicks off a new saga, with players stepping into the role of Ciri, Geralt’s successor. While not yet confirmed, rumors suggest Geralt is still alive and will play a role in the story.
