Upon the initial unveiling of Nintendo’s Switch 2, the gaming community buzzed with excitement over promises of a flood of high-profile third-party titles, previously unimaginable on the original console. Games like the sprawling open-world RPG Cyberpunk 2077 and the critically acclaimed action RPG Elden Ring were among those slated for release. While Cyberpunk 2077 has already carved out a home on the new hybrid console, players eager to venture into the treacherous Lands Between are still awaiting their turn, nearly a year after the console’s debut.

The journey for Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition, the customized Switch 2 version of FromSoftware’s monumental success, has been anything but smooth. Originally pegged for a 2025 launch, fans anticipated diving into the vast world sooner. However, a decision in October 2025 pushed its release further into 2026, with FromSoftware citing the need for additional time to refine ‘game performance adjustments.’

This delay hardly came as a shock, especially considering the early April 2025 previews of the Switch 2 edition were met with considerable apprehension regarding its frame rate and overall performance. Initial reports indicated the game struggled to maintain even 20 FPS. Yet, recent demonstrations at GDC 2026 have painted a far more optimistic picture. Esteemed publications such as GameSpot, Polygon, and RPG Site, among others, showcased a vastly improved experience, confirming that FromSoftware’s dedicated efforts are paying off. The new previews highlight a much smoother experience for Elden Ring on the Switch 2, whether played docked or in handheld mode.

While none of these recent reports promise a silky 60 FPS, they consistently point to a stable 30 FPS as the expected target. There’s even speculation that a 40 FPS mode could be a possibility by the time the game finally launches. Achieving 30 or even 40 FPS might not be every player’s ultimate desire, but it represents a monumental leap from the initial, barely playable sub-20 FPS figures witnessed during those early April 2025 demonstrations.

As we still await an official launch date, it’s clear that FromSoftware is diligently utilizing this extended development period to find the perfect equilibrium between performance and visual fidelity on the Switch 2. Elden Ring stands as one of the most acclaimed titles of this generation, widely considered among the greatest games ever created. If it can achieve a consistent 30 FPS on Nintendo’s new hybrid console, that will be more than enough to let its immense quality shine through for its dedicated player base.
