Fresh Quake Trademark Filing by ZeniMax Ignites Hope for a New Chapter

While id Software has impressively reinvigorated the legendary DOOM franchise with critically acclaimed installments since its 2016 resurgence, the fate of its equally iconic sibling, Quake, has been a topic of fervent discussion among fans. Until now, the pioneering 90s first-person shooter has mainly received attention through comprehensive remasters of its first two titles, alongside RTX graphic enhancements and persistent whispers of a brand-new game finally taking shape.

However, recent developments offer a tantalizing, albeit subtle, glimmer of hope: ZeniMax, the parent corporation overseeing id Software and both the DOOM and Quake intellectual properties, has submitted a fresh trademark application for Quake. This isn’t merely a renewal of existing legal protections, but an entirely new filing, strongly suggesting a potential new installment might be in the pipeline.

The specific details, although minimal, confirm a significant move. The new trademark was filed by ZeniMax on March 3, 2026, and is currently awaiting official approval. This filing came to light thanks to Timur222, who shared the discovery on X (formerly Twitter), as subsequently reported by GameReactor. A tweet from Timur222, dated March 8, 2026, prominently displayed the official filing, confirming ZeniMax Media’s new trademark for Quake, complete with a visual representation of the trademark document.

It’s crucial to temper expectations, as this trademark filing doesn’t guarantee a new game. Microsoft, the ultimate parent company of both ZeniMax and id Software, is currently navigating a significant leadership transition. Asha Sharma is stepping into the role previously held by Phil Spencer, bringing a new perspective to Xbox Gaming’s strategic direction.

Under this new leadership, it wouldn’t be unprecedented for existing projects to undergo re-evaluation or even cancellation, including any nascent Quake initiatives that this trademark might imply. Therefore, it’s prudent not to invest too much certainty into this filing just yet.

Nevertheless, the alternative is far more exciting: this could herald a comprehensive revival for Quake, mirroring the grand scale and critical success that DOOM has enjoyed over the past decade. Fans can certainly hope for the latter.
