In a resounding triumph for Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo, Nioh 3 has firmly established itself as a monumental success. Critics have showered the title with accolades, including a stellar 9.8/10 rating from our own Francesco De Meo, who declared it the best game the Japanese studio has ever made. This critical acclaim is mirrored by its commercial performance, as Nioh 3 has quickly become the fastest-selling entry in the trilogy, surpassing 1 million units sold.
Despite these impressive achievements, Team Ninja‘s leadership remains grounded, recognizing avenues for future enhancement. Fumihiko Yasuda, the producer of Nioh 3 and the head of the studio, openly shared these insights in a recent discussion with Gamesradar.
Yasuda candidly admitted that while Nioh 3 stands as an exceptional title, it possesses areas ripe for refinement. He emphasized the studio’s commitment to leveraging the insights gained from Nioh 3‘s development, particularly concerning its open-field mechanics, to foster improvements in subsequent projects.
Specifically, Team Ninja aims to deepen the world’s immersion and narrative delivery. Yasuda highlighted that while the game excels in its density, there’s a desire to enhance how the world’s lore and story elements are conveyed. This includes refining artistic elements for a more unique visual identity, better explaining the presence and context of yokai within their environments, and enriching the overarching narrative beyond the core loop of combat and loot acquisition.
Furthermore, the development team is cognizant of fan feedback regarding the limited enemy diversity. While acknowledging this point, the studio has clarified that efforts to introduce more varied adversaries will be directed towards forthcoming titles rather than adding new creatures to Nioh 3 itself. Their focus is on continuous improvement for future releases.
